‘Band Melam’ Director Satish Javvaji Fires at Critics Over Harsh Reviews
Says Disrespectful Reviews Hurt New Filmmakers and Discourage Fresh Talent
Kranthi Shekar - APR 1, 2026

Director Satish Javvaji has expressed strong disappointment over the harsh and insulting reviews received by his recent film Band Melam. The filmmaker stated that criticism is acceptable, but personal or disrespectful remarks in reviews can severely affect filmmakers, especially newcomers trying to establish themselves in the industry.
Director Reacts to Negative Reviews
Following the film’s release, Band Melam received mixed responses from audiences and critics. While some appreciated the youthful elements and performances, several reviews pointed out issues with the screenplay and pacing. Reacting to these responses, Satish Javvaji said that constructive criticism is necessary, but insulting language or dismissive opinions can damage the morale of the entire team.
He emphasized that filmmaking involves years of effort, planning, and dedication. According to him, when reviews focus on belittling the film rather than offering meaningful feedback, it discourages new directors and producers from taking creative risks.
“Reviews Should Be Responsible”
Satish Javvaji stressed that critics have the right to express their opinions, but they should do so responsibly. He noted that harsh and disrespectful reviews can act like “death sentences” for small films, especially those without big stars or strong promotional support.
The director also mentioned that smaller films rely heavily on early reviews to attract audiences. Negative remarks delivered in a dismissive tone can prevent viewers from giving the film a chance, ultimately affecting box office performance.
Effort Behind Small Films
Band Melam, starring Harsh Roshan and Sridevi, was released with expectations as a youth and family entertainer. Despite the mixed response, the director highlighted the hard work put in by the cast and crew. He explained that every film represents the dreams and efforts of many individuals, making respectful criticism important.
Call for Balanced Criticism
Satish Javvaji concluded by urging critics to maintain a balanced approach while reviewing films. He believes constructive feedback helps filmmakers grow, whereas harsh and insulting reviews can discourage creativity and experimentation in the industry.
The director’s comments have sparked discussion within film circles about the role of critics and the impact of reviews on smaller films and emerging filmmakers.
