Chandrababu Invites PM Modi to Inaugurate Bhogapuram International Airport on August 1
Alekhya Kota - JUL 22, 2026

The invitation extended by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the grand inauguration of the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram on August 1, 2026, marks a watershed moment for the infrastructure landscape of North Andhra Pradesh.
Meeting at Parliament House in New Delhi alongside key Union Ministers and state leaders, Chief Minister Naidu formally requested the Prime Minister to dedicate this greenfield aviation hub to the nation.
The Prime Minister’s acceptance sets the stage for a landmark event that promises to redefine connectivity, commerce, and industrial momentum across the Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam districts, positioning the broader region for long-term economic transformation.
The Bhogapuram International Airport represents the realization of a vision initially conceptualized during Chief Minister Naidu’s previous tenure between 2014 and 2019. Designed as a ultra-modern, world-class greenfield facility, the project faced years of delays and policy recalibrations before gaining rapid momentum under the current National Democratic Alliance coalition government.
Constructed in partnership with the GMR Group, the airport has achieved operational readiness within an accelerated timeframe, successfully securing all mandatory statutory and aviation clearances.
The upcoming inauguration is viewed not merely as the opening of an air transit terminal, but as the launch of a comprehensive economic gateway that will anchor the broader Visakhapatnam Economic Region.
During high-level review meetings preceding the formal invitation in New Delhi, Chief Minister Naidu repeatedly drew parallels between the transformative impact of the Shamshabad International Airport on Hyderabad and the long-term potential of the Bhogapuram facility for North Andhra. In the early 2000s, the development of Shamshabad served as the primary catalyst for expanding Hyderabad's IT corridors, logistical ecosystems, and urban footprint.
Similarly, Bhogapuram is envisioned as an engine of regional expansion that will integrate seamlessly with ongoing port developments, highway expansions, and industrial corridors along the eastern coast.
By establishing high-capacity international passenger and cargo handling infrastructure, the airport is poised to attract foreign direct investment, streamline supply chains, and position Visakhapatnam as a competitive trade hub on the Bay of Bengal.
Beyond core aviation operations, the Bhogapuram project encompasses an integrated ecosystem designed to build local human capital and industrial capacity. The complex will house specialized facilities including the GMR Skill Development Centre, an Aviation Hub and University, and the GMR-MANSAS EduCity.
These initiatives aim to train local youth in aeronautical engineering, ground handling, logistics management, and hospitality, ensuring that the economic dividends of the airport translate directly into skilled employment for the local population.
In a notable gesture acknowledging social contribution, the state government also announced a one-time free air travel provision for the farming families who voluntarily surrendered their lands to enable the construction of the airport project, highlighting an inclusive approach to major infrastructure creation.
The political and developmental alignment between the state leadership and the central government has played a crucial role in bringing the Bhogapuram project to fruition. The delegation accompanying Chief Minister Naidu during the invitation to Prime Minister Modi included Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, Union Minister of State Heavy Industries and Steel Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, and prominent Members of Parliament from the region.
This combined political push underscores the strategic importance attached to North Andhra's growth trajectory by both Amaravati and New Delhi.
The collaboration extends beyond aviation, with parallel discussions focusing on accelerating crucial irrigation networks such as the Polavaram project and expanding rural drinking water supply systems through the Jal Jeevan Mission, reflecting a holistic push toward regional infrastructure parity.
Preparations for the August 1 inauguration are being planned on a massive scale, with state authorities treating the event as a celebration of regional pride. District collectors and police officials across Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam have instituted comprehensive multi-tier security protocols and laid out extensive logistics management plans, including dedicated parking facilities designed to accommodate over six thousand vehicles.
Chief Minister Naidu instructed officials to ensure that the event prominently showcases the rich cultural heritage, tribal traditions, and traditional handicrafts of Andhra Pradesh to visiting national and international dignitaries.
By encouraging widespread participation from youth, students, and local communities, the administration seeks to frame the airport's opening as a collective milestone for every resident of the state.
The operationalization of Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport is expected to unlock immediate growth across multiple economic sectors, most notably tourism and air cargo logistics. North Andhra's coastal stretches, Buddhist heritage sites, and temple circuits stand to gain significantly from direct air links with major domestic and international destinations.
Simultaneously, temperature-controlled cargo facilities at Bhogapuram will enable local agricultural producers, aquaculture exporters, and pharmaceutical manufacturers to bypass distant transit hubs and ship high-value commodities directly to global markets.
As the final countdown to August 1 begins, the Bhogapuram International Airport stands as a concrete symbol of modernization, reflecting how strategic infrastructure planning can convert regional potential into sustained national economic growth.
