Govt Sounds Warning: Unsafe Sleeper Buses Could Be Cancelled Soon

The Andhra Pradesh government is considering strong action against private sleeper buses following a series of road accidents that have raised serious safety concerns. Transport Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy stated that sleeper bus services could be cancelled if they are found unsafe for passengers. The government, he said, is prioritizing public safety and will not hesitate to introduce strict measures if required.

The minister reviewed recent accidents and held discussions with officials from the transport and enforcement departments. During the meeting, authorities examined the causes behind the increasing number of incidents involving private buses, particularly those operating during night hours.

Rising Accidents Prompt Government Action

Several recent accidents involving sleeper buses have triggered concern among authorities. Many of these incidents occurred during overnight journeys, when buses travel long distances and drivers remain behind the wheel for extended periods. Officials noted that night travel, combined with fatigue and high speeds, increases the risk of serious accidents.

Sleeper buses are commonly used for intercity travel due to the comfort they offer during long journeys. However, authorities believe that certain operational challenges associated with these buses require stricter monitoring. Issues such as driver fatigue, over-speeding, and poor vehicle maintenance have been identified as key factors contributing to accidents.

The government has therefore decided to review the functioning of private travel operators and ensure that safety standards are properly followed.

Driver Fatigue Under Close Examination

One of the major concerns highlighted during the review is driver fatigue. Long-distance buses often run overnight without adequate rest breaks for drivers. Continuous driving for several hours can affect alertness and slow down reaction time, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

To address this issue, the government is considering making it mandatory for buses travelling long distances to have two drivers. This would allow drivers to rotate shifts and get sufficient rest during the journey. Authorities believe this step could significantly improve safety, especially during night travel.

Officials are also examining driver schedules and working conditions. Ensuring proper rest intervals and monitoring driver behaviour are among the measures being considered to prevent fatigue-related accidents.

Strengthening Vehicle Safety Checks

The transport department is planning to intensify vehicle inspections across the state. Authorities may conduct surprise checks to verify whether buses meet required safety standards. These inspections are expected to focus on brake systems, tyres, emergency exits, and overall vehicle condition.

Officials also plan to ensure that sleeper buses follow approved structural designs and safety norms. Operators who fail to comply with regulations could face strict penalties, including suspension or cancellation of permits.

Regular monitoring of vehicle fitness and maintenance standards is expected to reduce the risk of mechanical failures and improve passenger safety.

Over-Speeding Remains a Major Concern

Over-speeding has been identified as another significant reason behind bus accidents. To address this, the government is considering stronger enforcement measures on highways and major travel routes. Increased monitoring and stricter penalties for violations are expected to discourage reckless driving.

Authorities are also focusing on accident-prone areas where additional monitoring may be introduced. Improved enforcement and speed control measures are expected to reduce risks and ensure safer travel conditions.

Comprehensive Safety Review in Progress

The Andhra Pradesh transport department has begun a detailed review of sleeper bus operations. Officials are analysing accident data, examining route schedules, and reviewing compliance with safety guidelines. This review aims to identify gaps in regulation and implement necessary improvements.

Based on the findings, the government may introduce new rules or restrict sleeper bus services. If authorities conclude that sleeper buses pose a significant safety risk, stricter measures, including cancellation of services, may be implemented.

Officials clarified that the intention is not to reduce travel options but to ensure that passengers can travel safely.

Government Emphasizes Passenger Safety

Minister Ramprasad Reddy reiterated that the government will not compromise on passenger safety. He urged private travel operators to strictly follow safety regulations and cooperate with authorities. The government is determined to prevent accidents and improve road safety standards across the state.

With stricter monitoring, enhanced enforcement, and a comprehensive safety review underway, Andhra Pradesh may soon introduce significant changes in private bus operations. Whether through tighter regulations or possible cancellation of sleeper buses, the focus remains on ensuring safe and reliable travel for passengers across the state.
