Iran and Israel conflict article 1

Concise format

What is the background?

Iran recognized Israel in 1948 and they were allies. In 1979, Iran's revolution brought Ayatollah Khomeini to power. The new Islamic Republic called Israel illegitimate and began funding Hamas and Hezbollah. Israel worried about Iran's nuclear program. In June 2025, both countries directly attacked each other for the first time.

Why did Israel strike Iran now?

Israeli intelligence learned Iran was days away from making nuclear bomb material. On June 13, 2025, Israel attacked Iranian nuclear sites to stop them from getting nuclear weapons.

How do they compare militarily?

Iran: 88 million people, 800,000 soldiers. Israel: 9 million people, 570,000 soldiers. But Israel has better American weapons, missile defenses, and nuclear weapons. Iran uses old Soviet equipment. Israel's technology gives it the advantage.

How long can this last?

Netanyahu says Israel will strike "as many days as it takes" - probably weeks. Even after big attacks stop, smaller conflicts could continue for months. Iran reportedly wants to end the fighting.

What effect on India?

Oil prices jumped 7% after the attacks, hurting India as the world's third-largest oil buyer. India refused to condemn Israel's strikes, going against Russia and China. Higher oil prices could hurt India's economy.
