The political landscape in Kerala has shifted into high gear with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officially releasing its first list of 47 candidates for the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections. In a strategic move to establish a formidable presence in the state, the party has fielded several high-profile leaders, signaling its intent to challenge the long-standing dominance of the LDF and UDF.
The Nemom Battle: Rajeev Chandrasekhar Takes Center Stage
The most notable name in the inaugural list is Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the current President of the BJP Kerala unit and a former Union Minister. Chandrasekhar has been nominated to contest from the Nemom constituency in Thiruvananthapuram. Nemom holds significant symbolic value for the party, as it was the site of the BJP’s first-ever victory in the Kerala Assembly back in 2016.
Chandrasekhar’s candidacy is seen as a high-stakes move. A technocrat-turned-politician and successful entrepreneur, he has been a prominent face for the party’s developmental agenda. While he is often associated with his previous media investments-having been a co-founder of Republic TV (relinquishing his stake in 2019) and the owner of Asianet News-his focus has shifted entirely to the state's organizational growth since taking over the party presidency in 2025.
**Heavyweights and Familiar Faces
The first list features a mix of seasoned veterans and high-profile newcomers:**
K. Surendran: The former state president will contest from Manjeshwar, a seat where he narrowly lost by a slim margin in previous elections.
V. Muraleedharan: Former Union Minister of State for External Affairs has been fielded from Kazhakkoottam.
Sobha Surendran: A senior leader known for her firebrand campaigning, she will contest from the Palakkad constituency.
George Kurian: The Union Minister of State has been named as the candidate for Kanjirappally, emphasizing the party’s outreach to the Christian community.
R. Sreelekha: The former Director General of Police (DGP) is making her electoral debut from Vattiyoorkkavu.
Strategic Shift: Looking Beyond Traditional Bases
The selection of candidates reflects a broader strategy to diversify the party’s appeal. With four candidates from the Christian community and seven women in the first list, the BJP is clearly attempting to broaden its social base. Chandrasekhar himself described the list as "well-represented," highlighting the inclusion of former ministers and representatives from various social backgrounds.
The Election Commission has scheduled the single-phase polling in Kerala for April 9, 2026, with the counting of votes to take place on May 4. With the ruling LDF seeking a historic third term and the UDF fighting for a comeback, the entry of BJP’s "big guns" into the fray sets the stage for one of the most closely watched three-way contests in Kerala’s history.
