Telangana ASHA Workers Demand ₹18,000 Salary, Job Security; Protests Intensify
Demand for Fixed Monthly Salary
Kranthi Shekar - MAR 30, 2026

ASHA workers across Telangana intensified their protests, demanding a fixed monthly salary of ₹18,000, job security, and official recognition within the public health system. The demonstrations highlighted growing frustration among frontline health workers who say their contributions remain undervalued despite playing a crucial role in healthcare delivery.
Growing Discontent Among Frontline Health Workers
Hundreds of ASHA workers gathered to voice their demands, stating that they have been working under challenging conditions without stable income or employment benefits. They explained that their current incentive-based payment system is irregular and inadequate, making it difficult to meet basic living expenses.
The workers stressed that their responsibilities extend beyond limited duties, as they are actively involved in multiple healthcare programmes. Despite their full-time workload, they continue to be treated as volunteers rather than regular employees.
Demand for Fixed Salary and Job Security
The protesters demanded that the government implement a fixed monthly salary of ₹18,000 to ensure financial stability. They also called for job security and permanent status, arguing that their services are essential for strengthening the public healthcare system.
Workers said the absence of job security creates uncertainty and affects their morale. They emphasized that providing stable employment would improve efficiency and allow them to serve communities more effectively.
Crucial Role in Public Healthcare
ASHA workers serve as a vital link between communities and the healthcare system. Their responsibilities include supporting maternal and child healthcare, assisting vaccination drives, spreading awareness about diseases, and helping people access government health schemes.
They often work in rural and remote areas, ensuring that healthcare services reach vulnerable populations. Workers stated that their role became even more critical during public health emergencies, where they worked on the ground to support communities.
Additional Demands Raised
Apart from the fixed salary and job security, ASHA workers also put forward several other demands:
Recognition as government employees
Timely payment of wages and incentives
Social security benefits including pension and insurance
Paid leave and improved working conditions
Protection and safety measures during field duties
Protests Likely to Continue
The protesting workers warned that they would intensify their agitation if their demands are not addressed soon. They urged the government to initiate discussions and provide a long-term solution.
The agitation reflects growing pressure on authorities to improve the working conditions of ASHA workers. Protesters believe that strengthening their welfare will ultimately improve public health services, particularly in rural and underserved areas where they play a key role.
