TGSRTC Announces 2,243 Special Buses for Maha Shivaratri Pilgrims Across Telangana
Kranthi Shekar - FEB 16, 2026

With Maha Shivaratri celebrations around the corner, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has stepped up preparations to ensure devotees can travel smoothly to major Shiva temples across the state. Keeping in mind the heavy rush expected during the festival season, TGSRTC has decided to operate a massive fleet of 2,243 special buses to support pilgrims travelling to various religious destinations.
These special bus services will run for three days, from February 14 to February 16, covering around 43 prominent Shaivite pilgrimage centres across Telangana. The transport corporation has taken this initiative mainly to reduce travel difficulties for devotees, especially those coming from Hyderabad and other major towns, as temple visits during Shivaratri are known to attract huge crowds.
Maha Shivaratri is considered one of the most sacred festivals for Lord Shiva devotees, and every year lakhs of people travel to well-known temples to participate in special prayers, night-long rituals, and darshan. Recognising this massive movement of pilgrims, TGSRTC has planned the bus operations in such a way that major pilgrimage locations receive maximum support. Several high-demand routes have been given special priority so that devotees can travel without long delays or overcrowding.
Among the most popular destinations, Srisailam has been allotted the highest number of buses as it attracts a huge inflow of pilgrims not just from Telangana but also from neighbouring states. Similarly, Vemulawada, known for the famous Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy Temple, is expected to witness heavy rush and has been provided with a large number of services. Other important destinations like Kaleshwaram, Keesaragutta, Edupailya, and many more temple towns will also be connected through special buses during this period.
To make the travel experience easier for passengers, the special buses will be operated from key bus stations and important boarding points, especially in Hyderabad. Major pickup locations will include well-known terminals and city hubs so that devotees from different parts of the city can access transport easily. This arrangement is expected to reduce last-minute travel stress for pilgrims and also help avoid crowding at a single point.
TGSRTC has also focused on ensuring better facilities for passengers during the festival rush. Additional staff will be deployed at major bus stations to guide travellers and manage crowd movement. Seating arrangements, drinking water facilities, and proper announcements will be arranged to ensure devotees do not face inconvenience while waiting for buses. Special monitoring is also expected to be in place so that buses run as per schedule and passengers can reach their destinations on time.
Since this is a festival rush period and the number of special buses is significantly increased, the corporation has also announced that fares for these special services will be slightly higher than usual. The ticket prices may go up to one and a half times the regular fare for the special buses. However, the normal services running on regular routes will continue with standard ticket prices. This adjustment is aimed at covering additional operational costs during the peak festival days, including extra fuel, staff duty, and bus deployment.
At the same time, the state government’s free travel facility for women is expected to continue even during these special services, which will provide relief to many female devotees planning to travel for darshan. This initiative has been widely used across Telangana and has helped many women access public transport without financial burden.
TGSRTC has also encouraged pilgrims to plan their journeys early, especially those travelling to faraway destinations like Srisailam. The corporation is promoting advance booking options, which can help devotees avoid last-minute ticket rush. Online booking and reservation facilities are expected to play a major role in handling the increased demand, particularly for long-distance special services.
Officials have stated that this year’s special bus arrangement is being made on a larger scale compared to previous years. The main intention is to ensure that devotees do not face shortages in transport availability and that the festival travel remains smooth. Many pilgrims travel in groups, families, and temple associations, and special buses are expected to serve these groups effectively.
This large-scale transport plan is also seen as an important step to strengthen connectivity to pilgrimage sites and support religious tourism within Telangana. Many temples that will be served through these special buses are located in remote areas, where regular transport options may not be sufficient during heavy festival rush. By increasing bus frequency, TGSRTC aims to make it easier for devotees from all districts to reach these temples without difficulty.
The Maha Shivaratri special bus operation reflects TGSRTC’s effort to balance both public service and festival demand. With thousands of extra services on the roads, devotees can expect more travel flexibility, shorter waiting times, and better connectivity to major Shiva temples. The initiative is likely to benefit not only pilgrims but also local economies around temple towns, as the influx of devotees boosts business for shops, eateries, and small traders during the festive days.
Overall, the decision to operate 2,243 special buses is being seen as a major effort by TGSRTC to ensure smooth transportation during one of the biggest religious events of the year. As Telangana prepares for Maha Shivaratri celebrations with devotion and enthusiasm, these transport arrangements are expected to play a key role in helping pilgrims travel safely, comfortably, and without major disruptions.
