TVK Gains Major Boost as CPI(M) Takes Strong Anti-BJP Stand
Alekhya Kota - MAY 16, 2026

The political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu has become increasingly intense after CPI(M) leader P. Shanmugam openly explained why the Left party decided to extend support to Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). According to him, the decision was taken primarily to prevent what he described as the BJP’s “backdoor rule” in the state through political instability or indirect power arrangements.
The statement came during a period of dramatic political developments following the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results. With no single party securing a clear majority, discussions around alliances, outside support, and government formation rapidly gained momentum. Amid this uncertainty, TVK emerged as one of the central forces in the post-election political battle.
P. Shanmugam clarified that CPI(M)’s support was not based on sharing the same ideology with TVK but was instead a strategic political move aimed at protecting Tamil Nadu’s secular and democratic framework. He emphasized that the Left parties wanted to avoid any situation that could eventually create an opportunity for BJP influence through indirect means such as Governor’s Rule or unstable coalition politics.
The comments have sparked major political discussions across Tamil Nadu because they reflect the growing concern among opposition and regional parties regarding BJP’s expansion efforts in southern states. Tamil Nadu has traditionally remained resistant to BJP dominance, and several regional parties continue to position themselves as defenders of the state’s secular and regional political identity.
The CPI(M) leader also indicated that the people of Tamil Nadu had delivered a specific political message through the election results. According to him, voters did not fully support either the ruling establishment or the BJP-backed alliance and instead gave significant space to emerging political alternatives like TVK. In such a situation, he argued that respecting the public mandate was more important than allowing political instability to create unexpected power shifts.
TVK, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has quickly transformed into one of the most talked-about political movements in Tamil Nadu. The party’s rapid rise has changed the state’s political calculations and attracted attention from both supporters and critics. Vijay’s entry into politics created huge curiosity among young voters and sections of the public searching for an alternative political force.
The Left parties’ support for TVK has therefore become a major turning point in Tamil Nadu politics. While CPI(M) and CPI made it clear that they were offering outside support and not directly joining the government, their decision still carries strong political significance. It reflects a broader attempt by regional and secular parties to prevent BJP from gaining indirect political advantage during a period of instability.
The political developments have also intensified debates surrounding the role of the Governor and constitutional procedures during government formation. Several leaders argued that democratic conventions should favor inviting the largest party or a coalition capable of proving majority support on the Assembly floor rather than encouraging uncertainty.
Meanwhile, speculation regarding possible realignments among major Tamil Nadu parties has further increased public attention. Rumors surrounding alliances and shifting loyalties have added to the political drama, making the post-election period one of the most closely watched phases in recent Tamil Nadu politics.
For TVK, the support from Left parties has strengthened its position during a crucial moment. It also signals that Vijay’s party is being viewed seriously by established political forces despite being relatively new to electoral politics. The backing from CPI(M), CPI, and other secular parties has helped TVK project itself as a major player capable of shaping the future political direction of Tamil Nadu.
P. Shanmugam’s remarks have therefore become more than just a political statement. They reflect the larger ideological battle currently unfolding in the state - one involving regional identity, secular politics, democratic stability, and resistance to national political expansion.
As Tamil Nadu’s political scenario continues to evolve, the support extended to TVK may prove to be one of the defining moments in the state’s changing political landscape.
