VCK Sends Strong Message to CM Vijay on Cabinet Choices
Alekhya Kota - MAY 15, 2026

A fresh political debate has erupted in Tamil Nadu after the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) appealed to Chief Minister Vijay not to include rebel AIADMK legislators in his Cabinet. The request has created intense discussion within political circles because it comes at a crucial stage when the newly formed government is still trying to stabilize its alliance structure and finalize power-sharing arrangements.
The controversy began after speculation emerged that several AIADMK MLAs who supported Vijay’s government during the recent trust vote could be rewarded with ministerial positions. Reports of possible Cabinet berths for these rebel legislators triggered concern among alliance partners, particularly VCK, which is believed to be uncomfortable with the idea of accommodating leaders who switched sides during the political crisis.
Tamil Nadu witnessed dramatic political developments after the 2026 Assembly elections produced a fractured mandate. Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party but did not secure a full majority on its own. To form the government, TVK relied on support from smaller parties, independent legislators, and a section of AIADMK rebels who defied their party leadership during the Assembly confidence vote.
The trust vote became one of the most dramatic moments in recent Tamil Nadu politics. While the official AIADMK leadership directed its legislators to oppose Vijay’s government, a number of MLAs reportedly voted in favour of TVK, exposing internal divisions within the party. Their support ultimately played a significant role in helping Vijay secure the numbers needed to remain in power.
Following the successful trust vote, rumours began circulating that some of these rebel AIADMK leaders might be inducted into the Cabinet as part of political adjustments aimed at strengthening the government. However, VCK leaders reportedly conveyed their opposition to such a move and urged the Chief Minister to avoid rewarding political defections with ministerial posts.
Political observers believe the VCK’s concerns are based on both ideological and political reasons. The party has consistently positioned itself around social justice, secular politics, and anti-BJP ideology. Bringing former AIADMK rebels into the Cabinet could create dissatisfaction among cadre members and alliance supporters who expected the new government to maintain a distinct political identity.
There are also concerns within sections of the alliance that inducting defectors too quickly could send the wrong message to voters. Critics argue that rewarding legislators who switched loyalty during a political crisis may encourage opportunistic politics and weaken the credibility of coalition ethics.
At the same time, supporters of the government believe Vijay is facing a difficult balancing challenge. Since his party lacks an overwhelming majority on its own, maintaining political stability requires careful management of supporting groups and independent legislators. Some analysts believe accommodating certain rebels could help the government avoid future instability inside the Assembly.
The issue has also highlighted growing tensions over Cabinet formation and power-sharing discussions. Multiple alliance partners are reportedly seeking adequate representation in the government, making the situation politically sensitive. Any decision regarding ministerial appointments is expected to influence the internal dynamics of the ruling coalition.
Meanwhile, the rebellion has deepened the crisis within the AIADMK itself. Party leadership is reportedly unhappy with the MLAs who supported Vijay during the trust vote, and internal disciplinary actions are believed to be under consideration. The incident has intensified speculation about factional divisions and leadership struggles within the opposition party.
For Vijay, the situation represents one of the first major political tests after assuming office as Chief Minister. His decisions regarding Cabinet expansion will likely shape perceptions about his leadership style, coalition management skills, and long-term political strategy.
Political analysts believe the coming weeks could become crucial for Tamil Nadu politics. The manner in which Vijay balances alliance expectations, political stability, and public perception may determine how smoothly his government functions in the future.
As discussions continue behind closed doors, all eyes remain on the Chief Minister’s next move. Whether he accommodates rebel legislators or prioritizes alliance concerns could significantly impact both the stability of the government and the evolving political landscape of Tamil Nadu.
