New Zealand Cricketer Doug Bracewell Banned for Cocaine Use in Shocking Disciplinary Case

New Zealand Cricketer Doug Bracewell Banned for Cocaine Use in Shocking Disciplinary Case

Former New Zealand international cricketer Doug Bracewell has been handed a significant two-year ban from cricket after testing positive for cocaine, marking one of the most serious disciplinary actions involving a Kiwi player in recent years. The decision has sent shockwaves through the cricketing community, highlighting once again the strict anti-doping regulations enforced across professional cricket.

Bracewell, a 35-year-old all-rounder who represented New Zealand in all three formats of the game, was found guilty after a routine drug test conducted during his stint in English county cricket. The test reportedly returned positive results for cocaine, a banned substance under the sport’s anti-doping code.

The incident is believed to have taken place during a County

Championship match while Bracewell was playing for Essex.

According to reports, he consumed the substance shortly after the first day of play and was later tested, which led to the positive result being confirmed. Following the findings, the cricket authorities initiated disciplinary proceedings, which eventually resulted in a two-year suspension.

What makes the case more notable is that this is not the first time Bracewell has faced disciplinary action related to substance use. He had previously served a short suspension in New Zealand domestic cricket after a similar violation. This repeat offence is understood to have influenced the severity of the latest punishment.

Bracewell’s cricketing career had been a mix of promising performances and interruptions due to form and fitness issues. He played 69 international matches for New Zealand, including Tests, One Day Internationals, and T20 Internationals. Known for his seam bowling and useful lower-order batting, he was once considered a reliable all-round option for the Black Caps.

The disciplinary ruling has also raised broader concerns within the cricketing world about player welfare, mental pressure, and the importance of maintaining professional discipline at all levels of the game. While substance abuse cases in cricket are relatively rare compared to other sports, governing bodies have consistently maintained a zero-tolerance policy toward performance or recreational drug use when it violates anti-doping codes.

Cricket authorities emphasized that the ban reflects the seriousness of the offence and the need to uphold the integrity of the sport. Even though Bracewell had already stepped away from international cricket, the suspension still applies to all forms of professional cricket under regulatory jurisdiction.

Reactions from the cricketing fraternity have been mixed. Some former players and analysts have expressed disappointment, noting that such incidents overshadow careers and achievements built over years of hard work. Others have pointed out that the sport must continue enforcing strict rules to ensure fairness and discipline, regardless of a player’s reputation or past contributions.

Despite the controversy, Bracewell’s career statistics reflect a player who contributed significantly during his peak years. He was part of several important victories for New Zealand and played a role in memorable performances, particularly in Test cricket during the early phase of his international journey.

The case now stands as another reminder of how off-field decisions can have lasting consequences on professional sports careers. With the two-year ban in place, Bracewell’s future in competitive cricket remains uncertain, and it is unclear whether he will attempt a comeback once the suspension period concludes.

For now, the focus within the cricket community remains on reinforcing education and awareness programs aimed at preventing similar incidents among current and upcoming players.
