Nuwan Thushara Moves Court to Play in Indian Premier League After Board Denial
Sri Lankan pacer seeks legal relief after being denied clearance for IPL participation
Kranthi Shekar - APR 2, 2026

Sri Lanka fast bowler Nuwan Thushara has taken legal action in a bid to participate in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 season. The pacer has reportedly approached a court in Colombo after Sri Lanka Cricket refused to grant him the required No Objection Certificate (NOC), which is mandatory for players to compete in overseas leagues.
Thushara, who was signed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, filed a petition seeking court intervention to allow him to take part in the tournament. The 31-year-old argued that the board’s decision has affected his professional opportunities and requested that the court direct the cricket authority to issue the clearance.
Fitness Test Dispute Sparks Controversy
The issue reportedly arose after Sri Lanka Cricket introduced strict fitness standards for players planning to participate in foreign leagues. Thushara is said to have failed to meet the required benchmarks during a recent assessment, leading to the board withholding his NOC. As a result, he was unable to join his IPL franchise at the start of the season.
However, the pacer has reportedly challenged the decision, stating that his fitness levels have remained consistent and that he had previously received permission to play in overseas leagues without any concerns. He believes the decision is unfair and has therefore chosen to seek legal intervention.
RCB Faces Possible Setback
Thushara’s absence could be a setback for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, as he was expected to play an important role in their bowling attack. Known for his unique action and effectiveness in death overs, the Sri Lankan pacer was considered a valuable overseas option for the franchise.
The matter is now set to be heard in court, and the final decision will determine whether Thushara will be able to join the IPL 2026 season. Until then, uncertainty remains over his participation, while fans and cricket experts closely watch how the situation unfolds.
This development has once again highlighted the growing tension between national boards and players over participation in franchise leagues, especially as global T20 tournaments continue to gain prominence.
