Sunil Gavaskar Seeks Action Against Overseas Players in IPL
Gavaskar Raises Concern Over Foreign Players’ Commitment
Kranthi Shekar - APR 8, 2026

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has voiced concern over the role of overseas players in the ongoing Indian Premier League, stating that some foreign cricketers are not fulfilling the responsibilities expected from them. He pointed out that franchises spend significant amounts during auctions to sign players, particularly all-rounders, expecting them to contribute in multiple departments.
However, Gavaskar observed that some overseas players are limiting their participation, especially avoiding bowling duties despite being selected as all-rounders. According to him, this affects team balance and reduces the effectiveness of squad planning.
Calls for Strict Measures
Gavaskar suggested that stricter rules should be introduced to address the issue. He stated that players who are unable to perform full roles due to workload management or fitness concerns should clearly inform franchises before the tournament. This would allow teams to pick replacements instead of adjusting their strategy midway through the competition.
He also emphasized that franchises invest heavily in players and expect complete commitment throughout the tournament. Partial participation, he said, creates difficulties for teams and impacts overall competition.
Questions Over Workload Restrictions
The former cricketer also raised concerns about restrictions imposed by some national cricket boards. He pointed out that players receive permission to participate in the IPL but later face limitations on their roles. This, he said, creates confusion and affects the performance of teams that rely on those players.
Gavaskar added that in a short format like T20 cricket, contributing a few overs should not be seen as a major burden, especially for players signed as all-rounders.
Debate Gains Momentum
Gavaskar’s comments have sparked discussion among fans and analysts. Many believe overseas players should show greater commitment, while others argue that workload management is necessary due to packed international schedules.
With the IPL season progressing, the issue of player availability and role clarity is expected to remain a major talking point in the tournament.
