“Vinesh Phogat Stands Ground as WFI Questions Her Entry Into Competition”

Vinesh Phogat has once again become the focus of attention in Indian wrestling after reaching Gonda in Uttar Pradesh ahead of a national ranking tournament, even as a dispute over her eligibility to compete continues with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Her arrival at the venue has added fresh intensity to an already sensitive situation, with both the athlete and the governing body holding firmly to their respective positions.

Vinesh, one of India’s most prominent wrestlers, travelled to Gonda with the intention of participating in the competition, maintaining that she is fully eligible to return to action. According to her stand, she has completed all necessary formalities required for resuming competitive wrestling and believes there is no valid restriction preventing her from taking part in domestic events. Her presence at the tournament venue itself signals her confidence in her eligibility and readiness to compete.

However, the Wrestling Federation of India has a different interpretation of the situation. The federation has made it clear that Vinesh cannot participate in the event until all procedural and disciplinary matters related to her case are fully resolved. WFI officials have stated that they had earlier issued a notice seeking clarification from her on multiple aspects connected to her status, including issues related to her retirement and subsequent return to the sport.

According to the federation, the response submitted by Vinesh did not address all the points raised in the notice. They have described her reply as incomplete, which in their view means the matter is still under consideration. Until a satisfactory explanation is provided and all requirements are met, the federation has maintained that she remains ineligible for competition.

Vinesh, on the other hand, has strongly rejected this position. She has argued that her return to wrestling has been carried out in accordance with the rules and that she has complied with all relevant guidelines. She maintains that she is well within her rights to compete and that her registration for the Gonda tournament was done properly. From her perspective, there is no procedural violation that justifies her exclusion from the event.

This disagreement has created a clear standoff between the athlete and the governing body, with both sides standing firm. While Vinesh continues to push forward with her comeback plans, the WFI is insisting on strict adherence to its administrative process before granting clearance.

The situation has also brought renewed attention to the broader governance structure within Indian wrestling. Over the past few years, the sport has witnessed multiple disputes involving athletes and officials, often centred around selection procedures, disciplinary actions, and communication gaps. In Vinesh’s case, the complexity is further increased by the nature of retirement and comeback regulations, which can vary in interpretation depending on national and international guidelines.

The ranking tournament in Gonda was expected to be an important event for athletes aiming to improve their standings and strengthen their chances for future national selection. For Vinesh, it represents a potential return to competitive wrestling after a period of uncertainty. However, the ongoing eligibility dispute has now overshadowed the sporting focus of the event, turning attention toward administrative decisions rather than competition alone.

Despite the uncertainty, Vinesh’s decision to reach the venue reflects her determination to continue her career without interruption. Her stance suggests that she is prepared to compete if allowed, leaving the final decision in the hands of the authorities. Meanwhile, the WFI’s position indicates that no exception will be made until the matter is fully resolved through proper channels.

As things stand, the issue remains unresolved, with both sides awaiting further clarification and possible administrative review. The outcome of this situation is likely to have implications not only for Vinesh’s immediate participation but also for how similar cases are handled in the future within Indian wrestling.

For now, the focus remains on Gonda, where anticipation around the tournament continues, but the spotlight has clearly shifted toward the ongoing dispute rather than the competition itself.
