Tamil Nadu Power Race Intensifies After VCK Extends Support to TVK
Alekhya Kota - MAY 9, 2026

Tamil Nadu has entered a politically intense phase following a dramatic Assembly election result that left no single party with a clear majority. The fractured verdict has triggered nonstop negotiations, alliance discussions, and political maneuvering as parties race to form the next government.
The biggest surprise of the election has been the rise of actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Contesting in a highly competitive political atmosphere, TVK managed to emerge as a powerful force and significantly altered the state’s traditional political equation. Though the party did not secure enough seats to form the government on its own, its impressive performance placed Vijay at the center of Tamil Nadu politics almost overnight.
Soon after the results were declared, political activity intensified across Chennai and other parts of the state. Leaders from several regional parties began holding discussions over possible alliances and support arrangements. Smaller parties and independent legislators quickly became crucial players as both major camps attempted to gather the numbers required to claim power.
Support from Left parties and other regional groups reportedly strengthened TVK’s position in the government formation race. Political observers noted that Vijay’s growing influence has forced traditional Dravidian parties to rethink their strategies. For decades, Tamil Nadu politics was largely dominated by the DMK and AIADMK, but the latest election has shown signs of a changing political landscape.
As negotiations continued, attention also shifted toward the Governor’s role in inviting a party or alliance to form the government. Questions over constitutional procedures and majority support became key talking points in political circles. Meanwhile, intense behind-the-scenes discussions continued between party leaders as efforts to secure stable support gathered momentum.
The uncertainty also sparked speculation about possible unexpected alliances. Rumours of temporary understandings between rival parties created excitement and confusion among supporters. Although many of those reports remained unconfirmed, they reflected the unpredictable nature of the current political situation in Tamil Nadu.
Adding to the drama, reports emerged that several newly elected MLAs were moved to hotels and resorts amid fears of poaching attempts by rival camps. Such developments revived memories of similar political strategies seen in other states during tightly contested government formation battles. Security around key political figures and party offices was also reportedly increased as tensions rose.
Vijay’s emergence as a serious political challenger has become one of the defining moments of the election. His transformation from cinema icon to influential political figure has attracted massive public attention, especially among young voters and first-time supporters. His party’s performance is now being viewed as a potential turning point in Tamil Nadu politics.
At the same time, established parties are facing pressure from within their own ranks. Discussions about leadership, strategy failures, and voter dissatisfaction have reportedly intensified after the unexpected election outcome. Political analysts believe the results may force traditional parties to undergo major changes in order to remain competitive in the future.
As alliance talks continued, TVK appeared increasingly confident about securing enough support to move closer to forming the government. The possibility of Vijay becoming a major administrative force in Tamil Nadu has generated both excitement and political nervousness across the state.
The ongoing government formation process has now become more than a numbers game. It represents a larger battle over political relevance, leadership, and the future direction of Tamil Nadu. Whether this political shift becomes a long-term transformation or remains a temporary disruption will become clear only in the coming months, but one thing is certain - Tamil Nadu politics is witnessing one of its most dramatic moments in recent history.
