Gold’s 2025 Surge: The World’s Oldest Asset Finds New Strength
Aki - MAR 4, 2026

The ancient allure of gold is once again making headlines. In 2025, the precious metal’s price has surged to near-record highs-hovering around $2,450 per ounce (₹2.04 lakh per 10 grams), according to the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) and World Gold Council (WGC, October 2025). This rally reflects years of steady accumulation by central banks worldwide. Nations like China, Turkey, and India have steadily increased their gold reserves, signalling a move away from reliance on the U.S. dollar. As economic and political uncertainties rise, gold-the world’s oldest safe-haven asset-is once again shining as a universal symbol of stability.
A Metal of Myth and Empire
Gold’s power transcends wealth-it has been revered for beauty, endurance, and divinity. The ancient Egyptians saw it as the flesh of the sun god Ra; the Incas called it the “sweat of the sun,” while the Mayans prized jade even more than gold. Across eras, its pursuit drove empires and explorations-from the California Gold Rush of 1849 to the Spanish quests for El Dorado-reshaping the world’s geography and economies.
This reverence is visible in enduring architecture: Myanmar’s Shwe Dagon Pagoda gleams with gold plates, Japan’s Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) shines with gold leaf, and the Bible’s account of Solomon’s Temple speaks of divine opulence. In India, the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) in Amritsar, covered in nearly 750 kilograms of gold, and the Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram-believed to hold treasures worth over $20 billion (₹1.68 lakh crore)-reflect gold’s deep spiritual and cultural connection. Across continents and centuries, gold has symbolized not just wealth, but majesty itself.
India’s Golden Paradox and the Shift in Strategy
In India, gold is both devotion and discipline. The famous slogan “Roti, Kapada aur Makaan” (food, clothing, and shelter) could well evolve into “Roti, Kapada, Sona aur Makaan,” since for millions, buying even a small amount of gold each month is as routine as paying bills. It is a sacred asset tied to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, representing both prosperity and protection. Indian households now hold about 25,000 tonnes of gold, valued at nearly $2.1 trillion (₹175 trillion) - over half the nation’s GDP- while the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holds around 900 tonnes.
Yet, with rising prices, many Indians are shifting from physical jewellery to financial gold-through Gold Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) and Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs). Beyond convenience, this shift addresses a practical issue: non-standardized wastage and making charges on jewellery that reduce resale value. According to WGC, gold investments have outperformed equities in 2024–25, with returns around +20% compared to Nifty 50’s +12%, reinforcing gold’s role as a dependable long-term store of value.
The Perfect Storm: Why Gold Is Shining Now
Gold’s latest rally stems from a rare mix of global forces. Traditional economic drivers-a weaker U.S. dollar and lower Federal Reserve interest rates-coincide with deep geopolitical uncertainty. Conflicts like the Russia–Ukraine war, unrest in the Middle East, and internal U.S. fiscal instability have made investors wary of paper assets. At the same time, the explosive growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-while transformative-has introduced unpredictability to global job markets and financial systems.
In this climate, investors and central banks are seeking safety in tangible assets. Many nations are reducing U.S. Treasury exposure and diversifying into gold to shield reserves from currency volatility. For individuals, gold’s appeal lies in its immunity to inflation, political turbulence, and digital disruption-qualities that make it both ancient and modern in its relevance.
Looking Ahead: Gold, Silver, and the Future of Investment
Whether gold’s rally will sustain remains a pressing question. Most analysts foresee continued strength over the medium term (2–10 years), buoyed by ongoing central bank demand and economic uncertainty. However, normal corrections are likely as interest rates and investor sentiment shift.
Meanwhile, attention is turning to silver, often called “white gold.” With over half its demand now coming from solar panels, electric vehicles (EVs), and AI hardware, silver straddles the line between industrial necessity and financial refuge. For investors, a diversified approach that includes both precious metals like gold and strategic materials like silver and lithium offers balance-stability against risk, and growth against stagnation.
From Ancient Civilizations to Global Citizens
From the gold-laden tombs of Egyptian pharaohs and the treasure-filled temples of India to the modern vaults of central banks, gold has transcended every era as a marker of security and faith. Even in today’s age of cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence, its glow endures-uniting ancient civilizations and global citizens alike. Gold’s story is humanity’s story: one of trust, endurance, and the timeless pursuit of something that never loses its shine.
