Beyond Origins... TVS Group – From Rural Transport to Mobility Empire
Aki - MAR 4, 2026

Over a century ago, in 1911, in the temple town of Madurai, visionary entrepreneur T.V. Sundaram Iyengar laid the foundation of what would become one of India’s most respected industrial legacies. His company, T.V. Sundaram Iyengar and Sons, began as a modest rural transport and logistics service, operating buses and carrying goods and mail across southern Tamil Nadu at a time when motor vehicles were a rare sight. The business soon earned a reputation for punctuality and reliability, values that became synonymous with the TVS name. By the 1920s and ’30s, TVS expanded into vehicle maintenance, spare parts, and dealership operations, helping motorize southern India. After independence, the group diversified into auto components, finance, and logistics, anticipating India’s industrial surge.
The real turning point arrived in 1978, when TVS Motor Company was established, marking the group’s entry into two-wheelers. A collaboration with Suzuki in the 1980s produced iconic models like the TVS-Suzuki AX100, revolutionizing affordable personal transport. When the partnership ended in 2001, TVS forged its own path, introducing bestsellers such as Scooty, Apache, and Jupiter, blending innovation with trust. Today, as India races toward an electric future, TVS Motor’s iQube electric scooters lead the charge, supported by strong R&D in sustainable mobility. By FY2025, TVS Motor reports revenue exceeding ₹39,000 crore ($4.7 billion), exports to over 80 countries, and a market capitalization around ₹90,000 crore ($10.8 billion). The larger TVS Group, spanning auto components, logistics, and finance, employs over 70,000 people globally, carrying forward a legacy rooted in discipline and reliability. From connecting remote villages a century ago to powering modern urban mobility today, TVS embodies the spirit of India’s transformation - proving that progress is built mile by mile, with purpose and perseverance.
