45 Hyderabad Pilgrims Killed in Horrific Bus Crash in Saudi Arabia
Kranthi Shekar - FEB 19, 2026

In one of the worst tragedies involving Indian pilgrims in recent years, a bus carrying Umrah pilgrims from Telangana met with a devastating accident in Saudi Arabia, leaving over 45 people dead, most of them from Hyderabad. The incident has plunged the city into grief, with several families losing multiple members in a single night.
**How the Tragedy Happened
**
The bus was travelling from Mecca to Madina when it collided with a diesel tanker in the early hours of Monday. The impact caused a massive fire, engulfing the entire vehicle within minutes. With the flames spreading rapidly, almost all the passengers were trapped inside the bus, resulting in an enormous loss of life.
Authorities confirmed that 46 pilgrims were on board. Only one survivor managed to escape through a shattered window and is currently undergoing treatment.
**Majority of Victims From Hyderabad
**
Hyderabad Police officials and family representatives confirmed that most of the deceased were residents of Hyderabad and surrounding areas. Early assessments indicate that over 40 victims belonged to the city, with some families losing three generations in the same accident.
In one particularly heartbreaking case, 18 members of a single Hyderabad family were travelling together for Umrah and are feared to have died in the blaze.
The intensity of the fire has made identification extremely challenging, and many of the bodies are expected to be identified only through DNA testing.
**Government Response and Support
**
The Telangana government has swung into action with immediate support:
A special delegation led by Minority Welfare Minister Mohammed Azharuddin is being sent to Saudi Arabia.
The state cabinet has announced an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh for each victim’s family.
Coordination teams, helplines, and assistance cells have been set up in Hyderabad to support relatives awaiting updates.
The Indian Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate in Jeddah have set up emergency control rooms to facilitate information flow and documentation.
Saudi authorities have indicated that most of the victims will be laid to rest in Saudi Arabia, as the bodies were severely charred.
**Nationwide Mourning and Condolences
**
Leaders across the country have expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. Messages of condolence have poured in from political leaders, religious organisations, and community groups. Hyderabad, which has strong cultural ties with the Gulf, has witnessed widespread mourning as the scale of the disaster becomes clearer.
**A Harsh Reminder of Road Safety Concerns
**
The accident has once again highlighted safety issues on long-distance routes between Mecca and Madina, especially during peak pilgrimage seasons. While thousands travel safely every year, high-speed night travel and heavy fuel tankers on the route have often been cited as risk factors.
**A City in Shock
**
For Hyderabad, the tragedy is personal and painful. Entire families have been wiped out, and dozens of homes are now waiting for closure. As authorities work to complete identification and documentation, the focus remains on supporting the grieving families and ensuring they receive all necessary assistance.
