The 2026 Miami Open has reached a fever pitch, and the spotlight is firmly fixed on Jannik Sinner. Following his dominant third-round victory over Corentin Moutet (6-1, 6-4) on Monday, the Italian sensation didn't just advance to the Round of 16-he etched his name into tennis history.
The Sinner Streak: Surpassing a Legend
By taking the opening set against Moutet, Sinner officially broke a decade-old record held by Novak Djokovic. Sinner has now won 26 consecutive sets at the ATP Masters 1000 level, surpassing Djokovic’s 2016 mark of 24.
This incredible run of form dates back to late 2025:
Paris Masters (2025): 10 sets
Indian Wells (2026): 12 sets (Title win)
Miami Open (2026): 4 sets (so far)
Sinner has now won 13 consecutive Masters 1000 matches in straight sets, a level of dominance that makes him the overwhelming favorite to lift the trophy at Hard Rock Stadium.
The "Korda" Shocker: World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz Toppled
The path to the title became significantly clearer for Sinner after the top seed and World No. 1, Carlos Alcaraz, suffered a stunning 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 exit at the hands of Sebastian Korda.
The Rank Factor: Ranked No. 36, Korda is the lowest-ranked player to defeat Alcaraz since David Goffin (No. 55) pulled off the same feat at this very tournament last year.
The Match: Korda served for the match at 5-4 in the second set before Alcaraz surged back to force a decider. However, the American showed elite composure to break in the seventh game of the third set and seal his first-ever win over a reigning World No. 1.
WTA Update: Favorites and Fallouts
On the women's side, the narrative is one of mixed fortunes for the "Big Three":
Iga Swiatek’s Early Exit: In a major upset, World No. 1 Iga Swiatek was ousted in the 2nd round by Magda Linette, ending her hopes for a Sunshine Double.
Advancing Stars: Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka and home favorite Coco Gauff have both secured their spots in the quarterfinals. Sabalenka remains on track to become just the fifth woman in history to complete the Sunshine Double after her Indian Wells triumph last week.
Djokovic’s Uncertain Spring
While the young guard battles in Miami, a shadow hangs over the veteran ranks. Novak Djokovic withdrew from the tournament citing a right shoulder injury sustained during a grueling match against Jack Draper at Indian Wells.
The withdrawal is set to push Djokovic out of the world's top three for the first time in years. All eyes now shift to the clay-court season, with speculations rife about whether the 24-time Grand Slam champion will be fit in time for the Monte-Carlo Masters in April.
Jannik Sinner will face American Alex Michelsen in the fourth round. With Alcaraz out and Djokovic sidelined, the question is no longer if Sinner can win, but who can possibly take a set off him.
