The People’s Warship, Gaddar: An Unprecedented Journey from Revolutionary Ballads to Constitutional Struggle

Born from the soil of Telangana, Gummadi Vittal Rao-better known to the world as Gaddar-was a rare people’s poet, singer, and activist who ignited a fire in the hearts of the oppressed across India. He was hailed as the "Praja Yuddha Nauka" (The People’s Warship) because he was not merely an artist who performed songs; he was a revolutionary force who moved society with his voice. Gaddar’s life was not just the journey of an individual; it was a history that mirrored the agonies and aspirations of the Dalit, Bahujan, and working classes.

Childhood: Talent Born in Poverty

Gaddar was born in 1949 into a poor Dalit family in Toopran village, Medak district. His parents, Lachchamma and Seshaiah, worked as laborers to sustain the family. From a young age, Gaddar personally experienced the sting of poverty and social inequality-experiences that sowed the seeds of rebellion within him.

After completing his primary education in Bodhan, Nizamabad, he moved to Hyderabad to pursue Engineering at Osmania University. However, financial hardships and a rising social consciousness steered him away from academics toward grassroots movements. Dropping out in his first year was a pivotal turning point that changed the course of his life.

The Shift Toward Revolutionary Ideology

During his college days, Gaddar was deeply influenced by the Dalit Panthers and the Naxalbari movement. The class divisions and injustices perpetrated against Dalits moved him profoundly. He resolved to use art as a medium to awaken the masses.

Association with People’s War Group In 1971, along with B. Narsing Rao, he founded the "Art Lovers Association," which became a platform for social awareness. By 1972, the People's War Group, led by Kondapalli Seetharamaiah, adopted this organization as their cultural wing, evolving it into the Jana Natya Mandali.

In this phase, Gaddar rose not just as a performer, but as a vanguard. His songs were no longer for entertainment; they were weapons that marched people toward the movement. Performing thousands of times in rural and forest regions, he gave a voice to the suffering of the poor through his melodies.

The Meaning Behind "Gaddar"

Inspired by the Ghadar Party, which fought against British colonial rule, Gummadi Vittal Rao adopted the name "Gaddar." This was not just a name change; it was a symbol of his total dedication to an ideology and a struggle.

Underground Life and Armed Struggle During the 1980s, Gaddar spent nearly four years underground, participating in revolutionary activities in the forests. It was during this phase, when his songs became the heartbeat of the movement, that he earned the title "People’s Warship."

The 1997 Assassination Attempt: A Symbol of Oppression

On April 6, 1997, gunmen opened fire on Gaddar at his residence in Secunderabad. Five bullets pierced his body.

While doctors managed to remove four, one bullet remained lodged in his spinal cord for the rest of his life.

Gaddar pointed toward a group known as the "Green Tigers" and alleged government involvement. Though the case was never officially resolved, he carried that bullet within him as a living "mark of state oppression."

Ideological Evolution: The Journey Toward Ambedkarism

In the late 1990s, following ideological differences with the People's War Group, Gaddar distanced himself from the movement. He began gravitating toward the philosophy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. He started believing that a constitutional struggle was a more sustainable path than armed rebellion-a transition that marked the most significant shift in his life.

Role in the Telangana Movement

Gaddar played a monumental role in the struggle for Telangana’s statehood. His songs, such as "Amma Telanganama Akali Kekala Ganama," breathed life into the movement and stirred deep emotions among the people.

Cinematic Journey and Principles

Gaddar entered the film industry through the 1979 film Maa Bhoomi. His song "Bandenaka Bandi Katti" brought him immense recognition. Though he acted in and contributed songs to several films centered on social issues, his principles remained steadfast.

* Refusal of the Nandi Award: In 1995, he famously refused the state's Nandi Award for his song in Orey Riksha as a protest against government policies-a testament to his ideological integrity.

The Final Phase: Democratic Struggle

In his final years, Gaddar fully embraced the democratic path. He founded the "Gaddar Praja Party" and intended to enter electoral politics to educate the public on the power of the vote. He passed away on August 6, 2023. While his death marked the end of an era, his ideas remain vibrant.

The Legacy of Gaddar

Gaddar’s life offers three vital lessons:

* Art is a Weapon: It can be used for profound social transformation.

* Ideologies May Shift, but the Goal Remains: The fight for equality must never cease.

* The People are the Power: Their awareness is the true revolution.

The Telangana government’s decision to honor him with awards, statues, and inclusion in textbooks is a reflection of his indelible impact.

Conclusion

Gaddar was not just an individual-he was a movement. His voice, his words, and his struggle serve as a guiding light for social justice movements across India. His journey from revolutionary ballads to the constitutional path is a history every generation must remember. The voice that sang for the people may be silent, but the echoes of his thoughts continue to move society.
